Elizabeth Harper’s Naughty Class Act – Elle Magazine

Elizabeth HarperThey don’t make them like Elizabeth Harper these days, better known as the charismatic front-woman of Brooklyn electro-outfit, Class Actress. This year, she released, Rapprocher (French for “to come closer”)—a lush ’80s-tinged synth-pop soundtrack that shook dance floors and bestowed Harper with Madonna comparisons. Watch the music video for Class Actress’ dizzying banger Weekend and you’ll agree; the tasteful though titillating short features a lingerie-clad Harper involved in a weekend romp with Jean-Michel Basquiat’s foxy doppelgänger.

With her band’s co-headlining gig at the Music Hall of Williamsburg just around the corner, ELLE chatted with Harper about her favorite party dress, the good, the bad, and the ugly of New Year’s Eve, and what 2012 has in store for the naughty class act.

ELLE: All You Want For Christmas (But Didn’t Get) is…
EH: A Hästens bed.

ELLE: What’s the worst Christmas present you were ever given?
EH: The flu.

ELLE: What is your ideal NYE party dress?
EH: Hogan McLaughlin’s shipwreck dress, aka: my wedding gown.

ELLE: What’s your most horrifying NYE memory?
EH: Aren’t they all? I think any evening with an expectation is gauche. Some of my fav NYE’s have been in bed with a pad and paper taking stock, making plans, and going over the past year with a clear vision of how I want the next one to be better.
ELLE: How about your most romantic NYE?
EH: Being with my good friends in Malibu. At midnight we ran down and swam in the Pacific ocean, popped champagne, played charades in the front of the fire.

ELLE: What was your fondest Class Actress memory of 2011? What can fans expect in 2012?
EH: Our last show in Miami, followed by a proper massage at the Standard Spa. Nothing like a huge sub bass under the, um, stage… what a crowd! In 2011, expect more sub bass, and maybe some costume changes… But definitely more international love.

ELLE: What are some musts on your personal NYE playlist?
EH: I am really into the golden age of travel meets 90′s Armani catalogue. So maybe some Sade and Django Reinhardt. Oh, and some Robyn and Britney to sweeten it up.

ELLE: How do you take your coffee?
EH: Cortado, always.

ELLE: Favorite purchase of 2011?
EH: Dinner menus from a Transatlantic Ocean liner, New York to Paris August 1937. They are stunning.

ELLE: Favorite karaoke song?
EH: Right now Last Christmas by Wham, or Faith by George Michael.

ELLE: What’s on the Class Actress tour rider?
EH: Bulleit whiskey, fresh ginger, lemon, honey, and hot water. Oh, and hairspray.

ELLE: You’re known for being quite the provocateur. In your wildest dreams, describe a collab between you and fellow provocateurs across any medium and what would go down…
EH: Acting in a David Lynch film, recording a track with B.I.G. or a Harley ride up the coast with Cher.

Chelsea Leyland’s Rockstar Year – Elle Magazine

There’s just something about the New York-based DJ, Chelsea Leyland. The English transplant was everywhere in 2011—from spinning a slew of hipper-than-thou Fashion Week fêtes to being Kehinde Wiley’s go-to DJ at his annual Art Basel bash. Though she boasts an inevitably killer It Girl closet, overflowing with dark, punky pieces from Alexander Wang and Katie Gallagher, it’s Leyland’s hipster-bouncing-inducing tunes that have made the fashion world fall for her. ELLE caught up with Leyland to chit-chat about her exciting year and found out what tunes she’ll be ringing in the New Year with while getting all the cool kids in a dance-floor tizzy.

Chelsea Leyland

ELLE: What would you say was the best nightlife party/moment of 2011 for you?
CL: It would have to be a a cross between a party I DJed in Berlin for the artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster over gallery weekend and Kehinde Wiley’s annual dance party that I DJ every year over Art Basel. I have to say, there has been so many that this a hard question to answer.

ELLE: Favorite concert of 2011?
CL: Garry Clark Jr. He played on the lake at The Surf Lodge in Montauk.

ELLE: Favorite music video of 2011?
CL: Beastie Boys Make Some Noise. It’s hilarious.

ELLE: Any fun New Year’s Eve plans?
CL: For New Year’s, I will be in London. As of right now, I’m planning to go to a rave in a warehouse but my plans may change depending on what all my friends are up to. After that, I’m going to Tulum in Mexico to relax and get healthy.
ELLE: Do you have a New Year’s resolution?
CL: I have to say I don’t have one. I hadn’t even thought of that up until now. I think each year we should all try to work on bettering ourselves in every way we can.

ELLE: Do you have a favorite NYE memory?
CL: The best one I’ve had so far was in Barcelona five years ago. We all made no plans but had such a great night and went to so many different places throughout the night.

ELLE: What’s a musical collaboration you’d like to see in 2012?
CL: I think Lana Del Ray and Florence & the Machine could be interesting, though I’m all for more Kanye and Jay-Z. That never seems to disappoint.

ELLE: What are your top five songs you’ll be ringing in 2012 with?
CL: Lana Del Ray, Blue Jeans
Pretty Lights, Finally Moving
The Rapture, How Deep Is Your Love
Midnight Magic, Beam me up
Rihanna, We Found Love

Just Fight Free Radicals With Walnuts

Walnuts

Craving antioxidants? Grab some walnuts. They contain the almost twice the antioxidant content of any other commonly consumed nut.

Compared to eight other nuts and two types of peanut butters, walnuts contain the highest level of polyphenols, powerful antioxidants commonly called “lifespan essentials,” according to a new study published in Food and Function.

Antioxidants fight free radicals, or oxidants, those nasty molecules created by cigarette smoke, pollution, fried foods, sun exposure, and more. These damaging elements weaken the molecules in your cells, depriving them of one electron. To make up for the missing electrons, free radicals travel quickly throughout your body stealing electrons from other molecules, which turns the once-whole (and healthy) molecules into free radicals too.

And since they can damage any of your cells, free radicals can be pretty dangerous. When in your blood, they can eventually lead to heart problems; while in your eyes they can lead to blindness; and in your skin, they increase your chance of developing skin cancer. Oh, and they also make wrinkles develop faster.

So stop these unwelcome and damaging thieves in their tracks by loading up on antioxidant-rich foods, especially walnuts.

Why We Love The Shannon Twins?

The Shannon Twins

The Shannon Twins (known independently as Karissa and Kristina Shannon) are all-American Playboy Bunnies and also, as their title suggests, twins. Exciting!

While the two were confirmed as having “girlfriend” status with wrinkly lothario extraordinaire Hugh Hefner, they later said that the relationship was more for fun and an opportunity to get them on the E! Network reality TV show Girls Next Door (a programme about the life and times of the girls of the Playboy mansion) rather than an earnest attempt to bump uglies with him. Fair play. Their first appearance in the show is the most watched in history, with more than 2.4 million viewers tuning in to get a peek at the twins.

Unlike other previous Playboy centrefold twins, they managed to earn two consecutive months as official Playboy girl – although it’s probably due to the fact that, due to financial problems at the magazine’s publishers, they couldn’t afford to put out a second issue over the Summer of 2009. Still, it’s nice that they got recognition, all the same.

The twins entered the Celebrity Big Brother house for the January 2012 series along with Georgia Salpa and Nicola Mclean, which we can entirely get behind.
